Smells Like Teen Spirit

I tried arranging this all kinds of ways with all kinds of instruments. In the end this was the best version I could come up with. As Kev Says, maybe if he heard this he wouldn’t have blown his head off with a shotgun.

Darryl Reed feat. Cormac Heron & Seb Frost

About 10 to 8 on the night of Lovenite 2010 I was nabbed by this guy, Darryl Reed. “Yeah you made have heard of me… I’ve been in things.” Darryl wanted me to play bass and wanted Seb to play kit whilst he rocked out. I thought he was just going to play the blues. As it happened he ended up playing full songs. And they were great songs! I was just about able to keep up with him, until he turned his back every so often and I was hung out to dry. I really was on my toes.

Here’s a a video recorded from the balcony. Darryl Reed. You may have heard of him. He’s been in stuff. (As it happens he’s an ex porn star and was a friend of Nico of Velvet Underground fame.)

Lovenite 2010

Now on the fourth year Kevin Hylands and Cormac Heron return to the 12 Bar with guitar and banjo for their annual Songs For Lovers performance celebrating the best and best of love songs ever written. This year they will be performing classics from the likes of Turner, Tyler and Houston.

Last year’s performance was a riot, literally. Some girl got up on stage and tried to upstage them. (She was found beat up in some police cell the following morning.) This year’s promises to be just as eventful for they shall be joined with Seb on drums.

£4 entry with a picture of this page on your phone if you arrive before 8pm. Performance begins as ever at 8.04 pm. Bar open til very late. (You can print out this page for a discount if you prefer.)

You can catch a preview of Live And Let Die.

N.B. Due to my pending marriage this could (and probably will) be my last gig for the next 7 months.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

Today is the feast day of Saint Patrick and to celebrate I will be playing a gig tonight in London. If you are about come down to the 12 Bar Club where I will be playing at Irishnite at 8.04pm. If you play an instrument bring it down as my performance will be in true irish style of it being more of a party than a performance. Chifidh me sibh ansin.

St. Patrick’s Day Gig: Tues 17 March, 12 Bar Club – Irishnite!

To quote the 12 Bar, here’s some fun things to do in London on Saint Patrick’s Day:

Tuesday 17th March CORMAC HERON £6 Irishnite! ~ Drinkers, Thinkers and Doirty Little Tinkers: All are welcome.

Such was the greatness of the successful musical orgy that was Lovenite that the 12 Bar have invited Northern Ireland’s Cormac Heron back for Saint Patrick’s Day to do Irishnite! Oh yes!

This will be Cormac’s first Saint Paddy’s Day outing in the 12 Bar ever since his sensational With Or Without You I Cannot Live With Or Without You -  a love story between Danny Boy (a boy) and Molly Malone (a hooker) in which Cormac ended up on stilts on the 12 Bar Stage. Yes. Stilts!

Never one to bore his audience Cormac promises a fresh new set of Irish-based material ranging from The Undertones to Boyzone through Iggy Pop and he’ll have a bunch of people joining him onstage – some will be aware that they will be up there beforehand, and some won’t.

If you really want to have a great Paddy’s Day then come down to the 12 Bar for 8.04pm and be prepared for the sublime ridiculations. You can only expect the unexpected but one thing for sure to be sure you will never ever forget this Saint Patrick’s Day night and all so you won’t.

Onstage at 8.04pm and yes, that really does mean 8.04pm folks!

Eggtimer Gig Cancelled But I’m Playing St Patrick’s Day!

Due to unforeseen circumstances Eggtimer will not be playing the Marlborough tonight. However I will be playing 12 Bar Club on St Patrick’s Day. More info later.

Lovenite Report!

Lovenite was awesome! Special thanks go out to Rob Thompson who did an excellent job on drums – I was introduced to him about 20 mins before we went on – and Vicky Lines (?) who stepped in to do some vocals. Here is the set list roughly as it happened:

Only The Lonely – Cormac vox & banjo; Kev guit
Misirlou – Cormac banjo; Kev guit; Rob drums
Love Removal Machine Cormac vox & banjo; Kev bass; Rob drums
No Surprises – Kev vox & guit; Cormac banjo
Eye Of The Tiger – Cormac vox & banjo; Kev vox & guit
Chain Reaction – Kev vox; Cormac banjo;
Hello – Cormac vox & banjo; Kev bass; Rob drums
Public Image – Cormac vox & banjo; Kev bass; Rob drums
Don’t Leave Me This Way – Cormac vox & bass; Kev vox & guit; Rob drums
Groove Is In The Heart – Special guest Vicky Lines on vocals; Cormac banjo; Kev bass; Rob drums.
Karma Chameleon – Kev vox & guit; Cormac vox & banjo; Rob drums
Gimme All Your Lovin – Kev vox & guit; Cormac banjo; Rob drums
Waterloo – Kev vox & guit; Vicky vox; Cormac banjo; Rob drums

Encore: Hallelujah – Cormac vox & banjo; Kev guit

For me the highlights were the audience singing along to our simple version of Chain Reaction (plus me being able to remember all the chords to that one – it’s so complicated!), the audience barndancing to our hillbilly rendition of Karma Chameleon and the rawk of Gimme All Your Lovin.

Thanks for all who came down. Looks like I’m back in the 12 Bar again for St Patrick’s Day! (To be confirmed.)

Lovenite! TONITE!

I can’t wait. Plus I have loads of things to learn between now and then so physically I have no choice. Last nite Kev and I decided to throw in a couple of songs that were not on the list. Stick them along with The Cult song we decided to do on Tuesday and you have a couple of heads with limited boxes quickly getting filled. Woohoo!

Lovenite! Tomorrow Nite!

I will be returning to the 12 Bar Club tomorrow night to perform some classic love songs with Kevin Hylands. Among them will be hits from Roy Orbison, ABBA and Survivor. Also I will be back in the 12 Bar Club on Fri 13 March to perform a special St Patrick’s Day performance of Irishnite! See the gig page for more details.

Fri 13th Feb 2009 – Lovenite! 12 Bar Club

I’m hitting the 12 Bar again with Kevin Hylands this Valentine’s Day – Fri 13th Feb actually. Here’s the blurb:

Back for the third year Kevin Hylands and Cormac Heron return to the 12 Bar for their now annual Songs For Lovers performance celebrating the best and best of love songs ever written. This year they will be performing classics from mostly homosexually celebrated artists and some straights including O’Dowd, The Big O and Obba.

Warning! Songs will include banjo and celestial harmonies. You are advised to bring an extra pair of underwear.

£4 entry with a picture of this page on your phone if you arrive before 8pm. Performance begins as ever at 8.04 pm. (Bar open til very late.)

Fri 10 Oct 2008; Fri 17 Oct 2007; Fri 24 Oct 2008

Looks like I will be doing a tour of the Fridays starting with this one (10 October) in The Marlborough Arms, Camden. Then I’ll be going back to basics in the 12 Bar Club the following Friday (17 October) and then playing at the second London Placard Headphone Festival (24 October) . For more info check out my gigs section. Come to the 12 Bar Club gig on the 17th if you can. It’ll be me doing what I do best, though I haven’t quite worked out what that is nor what I will be doing.

John Devlin & The Revolvers – Live This Friday!

John Devlin will be playing a gig with his new band The Revolvers in the 12 Bar, London this Friday. He starts at 10 o’clock. I recommend you get down there if you are around. They are a great band. Sounds like The Beatles’ Rubber Soul or (surprise surprise) Revolver.  Great Friday night fun!

  • £4 with a printout of this page before 8pm
  • £5 with a printout of this page after 8pm
  • £6 with no printout and after 8pm

In the interests of saving the planet a photo of this page will do instead of a printout I have just decided.

New Job: John Devlin’s Manager

I seemed to have been talked into taking on the role of manager for John Devlin and his band The Revolvers.  This role has been dangled in front of me for a few years but I’ve never taken it either because I wasn’t ready or else John wasn’t ready. Well this time I thought what am I waiting for? John is a great performer, a great writer and a great laugh so why the hell not. I actually believe in him enough to book him a few gigs and get his music out to a wider audience. Hmm… Isn’t the music industry in decline? I suppose this is a good way of finding out.

I am sure I will write at length about John on this. I did like it though that when I arrived at his gig in the 12 Bar on Friday night someone asked Andy at the door who was playing. Andy replied, “John Devlin. A bit like the Beatles and Elvis Costello but a bit more of a punch to it.” The guy happily paid his entry fee. And then John Devlin and the Revolvers played a great gig.

Joe Moon – Vocals
Phil Phamous – Guitar
Jim Moon – Guitar

As with any Eggtimer gig you never know what you’re going to get. This was the first time the five of us had ever played before. Jim and Ben had only ever played about two songs each on different occasions.

Last song report:

I unplugged one of the guitarists for playing a song I didn’t want to play. He walked off in a huff but then returned – note him in the corner. The singer was spinning about on the floor of the stage like a possessed maniac. I started standing on his belly. The other guitarist unplugged my bass. I gave the drummer the signal to cut it. End of gig.

Eggtimer Gig This Friday: 12 Bar Club @ 9pm

Eggtimer will be improvising their nonsense this Friday in the 12 Bar Club. Visit the gig section and print some info out for cheapo entry. Be warned this music will be fully improvised and loud. Yes. I’ll also be playing the 12 Bar on Valentine’s Day and that show will be very structured and with Kevin Hylands. Bring your lovers. It will be nice.

Audtioning Drummers

Let’s face it: Drummers are mad. And the more madder they are generally they better at drumming they are. Eggtimer played a stinker gig last Tuesday (8th Jan) because we had no drummers and tried playing along with a drum track. A mess it was. Also we had a new guitarist who’d only ever played with us in the studio – Jim from The Moon. So on Friday we made up for it by having three drummers. It was fantastic. We played one song with one drummer, then another with another drummer and another with the other and then just kept rotating them. It’s a great way to audition drummers: play them live with two others to compere with. Kind of Drummer Idol or something. Needlesstosay they were all maniacs so it was an ace gig. Roll on Friday! We’re playing the 12 Bar Club! It’ll be the first time the five of us will have played as a bunch of people together – ever!
