Published September 12, 2008 Uncategorized 48 CommentsTags: Complain, Gig, Gigs, Live Nation, London, Madge, Madonna, Music, U2, Wembley
Madonna played Wembley last night and many are complaining that the sound was awful as well as the fact that her show started late and therefore ended very late leaving many people stranded and even some having to sleep rough on the streets of London. So where to complain about Madonna concert?
Those wishing to complain about the Madonna gig should write to info@livenation.co.uk stating their full contact details (name, address, phone number, email), the nature of their complaint (please be specific, e.g. what you could or could not hear etc.) and your seating and booking reference numbers (these will be on your tickets).
Warning! Live Nation are only able to deal with the purchaser for those of you who bought off eBay. (That includes me!)
You can also write to Madonna via her website here.
Live Nation will be handling Madonna’s new studio efforts, tours, merchandise, DVD releases, sponsorships, licensing agreements, fan club, Web site, and TV and film projects until 2017. They also other large acts including U2.

How To Get Your Act Together

- Draw up a list of things you have to do
- Do them
- Try not to forget anything
- Try and get paid for it without pissing too many people off
- Go easy on the drugs
- Repeat
This was inspired by the BBC and their lack of response to my emails:

Tues 8th Jan 2008 – Eggtimer Gig

-
No songs
-
No rehearsals
-
No permanent band members
Even less permanent band members as two of the band have decided to leave. Still every time we take to the stage you can be sure of one thing. We haven’t a clue what we are going to do. Every time therefore it is exciting. Plus I have just bought a new bass. An orange one. Fat with an extra string. One more string for that extra width of welly. Come on down to the New Cross Inn tomorrow night (08.01.08). We’ll be on at about 9ish. It may even change your mind.
How To Improvise: Rock Music
Published January 7, 2008 Uncategorized Leave a CommentTags: Improvisation, Music, Music Lessons, Tips
Improvisation = Confidence = Sheer Conviction
Key thoughts on improvising rock music:
- There is no room for wishy-washy nonsense when you improvise.
- You grab the gig by the throat, thrown it up against the wall and say “That is what you have wanting”
- When you go into a verse or a chorus or a bridge you have to be determined. You must own that part and take the whole song with you.
- You must listen to what is going on around you
- Look up. See what’s happening. (Particularly look out for the ending of the song).
- Try not to go over four minutes.
- Don’t go longer than four minutes in more than two songs.
- Definitely don’t go longer than eight minutes.
- Play to the strengths of the other players. (E.g. I know that Joe Moon sounds better in ‘D’ or ‘E’ than in the key of ‘A’)
- Nail it
Tom Jones = Shirley Bassey
Shakin’ Stevens = Bonnie Tyler
Aled Jones = Charlotte Church
Thank you
Karlheinz Stockhausen: 08.22.28 – 12.05.07
Published December 8, 2007 Uncategorized Leave a CommentTags: Beatles, Music, Rolf Gehlhaar, Stockhausen, Zappa
German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen has died at the age of 79. He’s famous for coming up with early electronic music of the 50s, appeared on the cover of Sgt. Peppers and having influenced Frank Zappa.
I was once given his phone number by a friend of his and ex-colleague of mine, Rolf Gehlhaar. I was interviewing a lot of avant-garde musicians at the time including Max Eastley and was going to go for Stockhausen but it was around about the time that he said that the September 11 attacks were “the greatest work of art there is in the entire cosmos”. Stockhausen since apologised explaining that every piece of art takes a lot of planning and this was the most perfectly executed planned series of events.
Yesterday I obtained a plectrum banjo made by Ozark. It’s different from my Tanglewood 5-string in that it’s three times the price and about three times the bloody weight as well.
So what’s a plectrum banjo? It’s the same length as a 5-string which is used for bluegrass but without the extra string. The tenor banjo has a shorter neck and is typically used by Irish banjo players and is tuned like a fiddle or a mandolin.
Fortunately I already know how to play the 5-string and the mandolin. Unfortunately the plectrum banjo has a totally different tuning to both which effectively means I have to learn a new instrument. The tuning of C G B D makes it popular for the playing of playing jazz or, in my case, Prince.
