Madonna played Wembley last night and many are complaining that the sound was awful as well as the fact that her show started late and therefore ended very late leaving many people stranded and even some having to sleep rough on the streets of London. So where to complain about Madonna concert?

Madonna Review: Wembley Gig – September 11 2008

Hard Candy. Madonna.

I’d never seen Madonna before so I was going to this gig with high expectations. I mean this girl has been around the same amount of time as Prince!

The video intro sequence set the whole thing up – it was amazing. A candy-styled pinball extravagansa. You could see that this five minute intro was a project in itself. From the video content to the way it was displayed on moving screens. It really set the gig up. Dancers appeared and then the Queen of pop was revealed on a throne turning on a platform.

The opening ‘Candy Shop’ was Madonna informing everyone that she is still working on delivering her best material. Then she followed it up with another one off the new album ‘Beat Goes On’ and then ‘Human Nature’ so when ‘Vogue’ kicks in the crowd are well up for it. Madonna is in great shape and is dancing flat out.

An interlude follows where two of her dancers perform a mock boxing match which Madonna slips into something less comfortable and presumably catches her breath. She reappears with a black Gibson Les Paul and plays ‘Into The Groove’ complete with Keith Haring-like video content broadcast behind her. Another new one ‘Heartbeat’ follows and then she’s back with another Gibson for ‘Borderline’, this time it’s a pink SG complete with a whammy bar!

‘She’s Not Me’, ‘Music’, Video Interlude (with Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’), ‘Devil Wouldn’t Recognise You’, ‘Spanish Lesson’ and ‘Miles Away’ are next. ‘La Isla Bonita/Lela Pala Tute’ get the crowd going frantic and then there is a strange Romanian folk interlude where Madonna is sitting whilst being serenaded by the eldest guitarist of the folk group. Quite touching and nice to see Madonna take a much needed rest – she’s really been giving it plenty! ‘You Must Love Me’, Video Interlude, ’4 Minutes’ and then ‘Like A Prayer’ which is electric. So retro it’s great though I would have liked to have seen the backing choir instead of hearing them recorded.

‘Ray Of Light’ is awesome. And the projections behind seem very current what with CERN’s LHC recreating the Big Bang this week. Then Madonna tells us she’s up for doing requests but “I’m not doing that one cos I can’t remember the lyrics…I can’t even remember the words to the new ones”. Then, with just the drums backing her, she delives a quick rendition of ‘Express Yourself’ with the audience providing a very convincing accompaniment. “This is why I love the UK!” she explains, then dropping into the opening guitar riff of ‘Hung Up’.* She’s been having the craic with the audience throughout.

Ending with ‘Give It 2 Me’ Madonna is definitely stating that this is no farewell tour and that she these new songs are just as relevant, timeless and anthemic as the classics she didn’t play. In fact she didn’t even need to play ‘Material Girl’ or ‘Like A Virgin’ or ‘Holiday’ or ‘Lucky Star’ or Crazy For You’ or ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ or… you get the idea.

Great gig and the Queen of pop she is… but she ain’t no Prince.

* Girls take note! For this track Madonna used an open tuning and just played the 4 bass strings meaning she could rock out with just using one finger. She’s definitely a worthy guitarist though as she proved with ‘Borderline’.

Footnote: Many people seem to have had an awful experience because of the sound. Those wishing to complain should write to info@livenation.co.uk stating their full contact details (name, address, phone number, email), the nature of their complaint (please be specific about what you could or could not hear) and your seating and booking reference numbers (these will be on your tickets). (Thanks Martyn!)

Eggtimer Rock!

A couple of weeks ago I played a blinder gig with my improv rock band Eggtimer. We were all on fire. I was so on fire I broke a string on my D string on 5 string bass. How rock is that? And I’m 35 years old! If I did coke and hookers I’d be up there with John Entwhistle.

Instead of replacing my string I have decided to play the now four stringed bass and be on fire every time until I break the rest of the strings. In fact my main ambition is to end up with no strings during a gig and just hum bass lines. Why not? I have a baritone voice so my singing tutor tells me.

Valentine’s Day is looming. Only four days to go. Confused? Are you in London? Well come on down to Songs For Lovers in the 12 Bar Club, Denmark Street. I am preparing a special show with Kevin Hylands. Punk love songs on the banjo. See the gig section.

Audtioning Drummers

Let’s face it: Drummers are mad. And the more madder they are generally they better at drumming they are. Eggtimer played a stinker gig last Tuesday (8th Jan) because we had no drummers and tried playing along with a drum track. A mess it was. Also we had a new guitarist who’d only ever played with us in the studio – Jim from The Moon. So on Friday we made up for it by having three drummers. It was fantastic. We played one song with one drummer, then another with another drummer and another with the other and then just kept rotating them. It’s a great way to audition drummers: play them live with two others to compere with. Kind of Drummer Idol or something. Needlesstosay they were all maniacs so it was an ace gig. Roll on Friday! We’re playing the 12 Bar Club! It’ll be the first time the five of us will have played as a bunch of people together – ever!

Tues 8th Jan 2008 – Eggtimer Gig

  • No songs
  • No rehearsals
  • No permanent band members

Even less permanent band members as two of the band have decided to leave. Still every time we take to the stage you can be sure of one thing. We haven’t a clue what we are going to do. Every time therefore it is exciting. Plus I have just bought a new bass. An orange one. Fat with an extra string. One more string for that extra width of welly. Come on down to the New Cross Inn tomorrow night (08.01.08). We’ll be on at about 9ish. It may even change your mind.

How To Improvise: Rock Music

Improvisation = Confidence = Sheer Conviction

Key thoughts on improvising rock music:

  • There is no room for wishy-washy nonsense when you improvise.
  • You grab the gig by the throat, thrown it up against the wall and say “That is what you have wanting”
  • When you go into a verse or a chorus or a bridge you have to be determined. You must own that part and take the whole song with you.
  • You must listen to what is going on around you
  • Look up. See what’s happening. (Particularly look out for the ending of the song).
  • Try not to go over four minutes.
  • Don’t go longer than four minutes in more than two songs.
  • Definitely don’t go longer than eight minutes.
  • Play to the strengths of the other players. (E.g. I know that Joe Moon sounds better in ‘D’ or ‘E’ than in the key of ‘A’)
  • Nail it

Karlheinz Stockhausen: 08.22.28 – 12.05.07

German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen has died at the age of 79. He’s famous for coming up with early electronic music of the 50s, appeared on the cover of Sgt. Peppers and having influenced Frank Zappa.

I was once given his phone number by a friend of his and ex-colleague of mine, Rolf Gehlhaar. I was interviewing a lot of avant-garde musicians at the time including Max Eastley and was going to go for Stockhausen but it was around about the time that he said that the September 11 attacks were “the greatest work of art there is in the entire cosmos”. Stockhausen since apologised explaining that every piece of art takes a lot of planning and this was the most perfectly executed planned series of events.

New Banjo

Yesterday I obtained a plectrum banjo made by Ozark. It’s different from my Tanglewood 5-string in that it’s three times the price and about three times the bloody weight as well.

So what’s a plectrum banjo? It’s the same length as a 5-string which is used for bluegrass but without the extra string. The tenor banjo has a shorter neck and is typically used by Irish banjo players and is tuned like a fiddle or a mandolin.

Fortunately I already know how to play the 5-string and the mandolin. Unfortunately the plectrum banjo has a totally different tuning to both which effectively means I have to learn a new instrument. The tuning of C G B D makes it popular for the playing of playing jazz or, in my case, Prince.
